To Hell and High Water

  • A large yacht sits in the middle of Cross Bay Boulevard. Broad Channel lies just before the bridge to the Rockaways. Residents upset over the little coverage or help to their community write their grievances on signs throughout the neighborhood.
  • A family photo lies on the sidewalk next to a pile of abandoned furniture. Entire homes were submerged by the surge of water as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Families were forced to evacuate and leave behind the majority of their belongings.
  • An American Flag hangs in front of a house in Broad Channel. The houses interior lies on the sidewalk in ruins.
  • Sanitation workers, police, refugees and volunteers pass this sign left by Broad Channel Residents on Cross Bay Boulevard, the main thoroughfare through Broad Channel.
  • A garage with destroyed doors is guarded by a sign that threatens looters will be crucified. Several instances of looting have taken place in the Rockaways, located a short bridge away from Broad Channel.

As the flooding from Sandy subsided, Broad Channel residents found themselves in a decimated landscape. Homes, businesses and public lands were ravished by the floodwaters. Disaster relief was slow, with more immediate attention being given to the decimated Rockaway neighborhoods located just across the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge. As residents left the area, heading to stay with friends and relatives for the indefinite future, signs sprung up around the neighborhood, giving words to the frustrations and grievances felt by so many of those affected by the storm.
